A mere 24 hours after a federal lawsuit was filed against Secretary of Interior Salazar and Hopi Tribal Council, the plaintiff’s in the case met at the Mishongnovi village office for a peacefully assembled meeting with their attorney.

Unknown to the group, a handful of individuals who claimed to be representative of Mishongnovi village members, with 28 signatures, requested from Hopi Tribal Council that the Mishongnovi Village office be closed. Hopi Tribal Council allegedly gave authority to shut down the village office. In contrast, the Silent Majority group of Mishongnovi, with 76 signatures requested that their office remain open!!

Despite the MAJORITY of individuals from this village who wanted their community office open, the Hopi Tribal Council, General Counsel and Tribal Chairman, exerted their so called authority, completely ignoring that this was a village matter. As usual, the Hopi Rangers were used to escort Hopi citizens, and Mishongnovi village members out of THEIR own village community center. Keep in mind this is a traditionally governed village under a village leader selected by the Bear Clan.

This atrocity has to stop! Why are a handful of individuals using the Tribal Council, Rangers and Chairman to override on the inherited sovereignty of the villages? This is setting a precedent for ALL villages!. Open your eyes Hopi people, your village could be NEXT!!
